Hearing for quota protest coordinators' release postponed due to judge's illness - ISN TV

Bangladesh: The High Court has postponed the hearing of a writ petition seeking orders not to shoot at quota reform protesters and to release six coordinators of the movement from DB custody, as a judge of the relevant bench is on leave.

The High Court bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice S M Masud Hossain Dolon was supposed to hold the hearing on Wednesday, but the hearing did not take place as the latter judge was on league due to illness, according to media reports.

The new hearing date will be announced later. Earlier, on Monday, the writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking an order to prevent firing on quota reform protesters.  The writ also requested the release of six coordinators of the quota reform movement from DB custody.

The writ was filed by Supreme Court lawyers Manzur Al Matin and Ainun Nahar Siddiqa Lipi.  It named the cabinet secretary, home ministry secretary, inspector general of police and army chief, among others, as respondents.

A hearing of the writ was held on Tuesday, during which the court remarked that all deaths were tragic. “We are ashamed of the violence and deaths during the quota reform movement." "The constitution and the law encompass all matters, but we are not adhering to the constitution or the law," the court observed.
